Skills Discovery Electives & Applied Learning

The YouNG Academy @ NAS (YANAS) oversees the implementation of skills discovery electives (SDEs) and Applied Learning Modules (ApLM) in NAS. Through the programme, we seek to inculcate in NASians a love and curiosity for learning and connect learning beyond the classroom.

YANAS enables students to:

1. Exercise Agency

   • Provide students the freedom to make choices and decisions regarding their learning.

   • Empower them to take control of their educational journey.

2. Explore Interests and Passions

   • Encourage students to delve into subjects or activities that genuinely captivate them.

   • Foster a sense of curiosity and enthusiasm for learning.

3. Develop Intrinsic Motivation

   • Cultivate internal motivation for learning, driven by personal interest and satisfaction.

   • Emphasize the value of learning for its own sake.

4. Facilitate Learning Beyond the Formal Curriculum

   • Offer opportunities for learning that extend beyond the established academic syllabus.

   • Support a diverse and comprehensive education.

5. Nurture Self-Directed Learning

   • Support a diverse and comprehensive education.

   • Prepare students for a lifelong learning mindset.

YANAS is implemented through:

The Skills Discovery Electives (SDE) program

SDE offers a diverse array of electives for Secondary 1 to 3 students to choose from. Each elective consists of five weekly sessions designed to provide students with exposure to various fields, helping them discover their strengths and potential. The electives cover a wide range of interests, including aesthetics, business & finance, cultural & language, digital, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and sports.

Applied Learning Modules (ApLM)

Applied Learning Modules (ApLM) are designed to complement the Secondary curriculum through their focus on the practical application of knowledge. The ApLM provide students with hands-on, applied learning opportunities - learning that involves doing and applying, learning about the real world, and learning for life. ApLM@Poly also provide students with taster experiences of learning in a polytechnic and can contribute to helping them make more informed decisions for their post-secondary education.

By integrating these approaches, YouNG Academy @ NAS (YANAS) aims to create a more engaging, personalized, and practical educational experience for students, preparing them for lifelong learning and success in their future endeavours.
