Syllabus Aims
EL Syllabus 2020 seeks to develop competencies in our learners through the teaching and learning of EL to enable them to be empathetic communicators, discerning readers and creative enquirers
The overarching aim of the EL Syllabus 2020 is to develop effective and affective language use in students in the following areas:
Listen to, read and view critically and with accuracy, understanding and appreciation a wide array of literary and informational texts in Standard English from print, non-print and digital networked sources.
Speak, write and represent in Standard English that is grammatical, fluent, intelligible and appropriate for different purposes, audiences, contexts and cultures.
Use Standard English grammar and vocabulary accurately and appropriately, and understand how speakers/writers put words together and use language to communicate meaning and achieve impact.
Use English with impact, effect and affect.

Syllabus Aims
Students will be:
● Empathetic and Global Thinkers. They will learn to
empathise with other people’s experiences;
be open and appreciate multiple perspectives
develop global awareness through the study of texts from different part of the world; and
reflect on their own values, perspectives and identities as they consider the impact of their beliefs and actions on society
● Critical Readers. They will learn to
appreciate the aesthetic value and enjoy the nuances of language, with perceptive and questioning minds;
read widely and independently, from a variety of genre conventions; and
appreciate the contexts in which literary texts are written, read and understood.
● Creative Meaning Makers. They will learn to
embrace ambiguity and uncertainty as necessary in the meaning-making process; and
actively and creatively construct their understanding and interpretations of texts.
● Convincing Communicators. They will learn to
demonstrate critical thinking when discussing and writing about texts; and
convince others of their interpretations, based on sound reasoning with evidence.
Special Programmes
NASEdventure (Digital Content Creation)
A one-day enrichment programme that focused on the authentic use of the English Language. The session kicked off with a sharing by Ms Annette Lee, a digital content creator, on how to craft social media posts that are impactful yet engaging. Subsequently, students put into practice the tips that were shared by Ms Lee by crafting a social media post of their own.
Debate
As a special interest group, our debaters are trained by a coach in research and information sourcing, debate strategies and styles, and rebuttal techniques. They are given opportunities to come up with debate motions as well as participate in mini debates to hone their skills. The highlight of the year for our debaters is when they represent the school in the Singapore Secondary Schools Debating Championships. 2023, in particular, was an exceptional year as one of our debaters, Jonas Lim, was awarded the best floor speaker in the Championships.
Book a Writer: Stella Kon
Book A Writer is SingLit Station’s workshop-for-schools programme, featuring a roster of Singapore’s most important writers at work today. This programme features a talk by local playwright Ms Stella Kon, author of the Literature text Emily of Emerald Hill. This session gave our students an opportunity to interact with Ms Kon, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of the text as well as gain an insight into the process of creative writing.
